A ductless mini split is a heating and cooling system made up of an outdoor compressor unit connected to one or more indoor units mounted in individual rooms, without any ductwork between them. Refrigerant lines run through a small wall penetration rather than through ducts, which makes mini splits a practical way to add conditioned space without the cost or disruption of extending an existing duct system.
Mini splits are a strong fit for additions built after the original ductwork was designed, garages and shops with no HVAC coverage, finished basements that run cold in winter or warm in summer, bonus rooms over garages that never match the rest of the house, and any single room that has always struggled to get comfortable through the main system. In each of these cases, extending ductwork is often more disruptive and expensive than installing a dedicated mini split.
A single-zone system connects one outdoor unit to one indoor unit, ideal for conditioning a single room or small space. A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to multiple indoor units in different rooms, each controlled independently, which works well for additions with several rooms or homes wanting zoned control without a full ductwork retrofit.
Most residential mini splits are heat pump systems, meaning the same equipment handles both heating and cooling by reversing the refrigerant cycle, similar to a whole-home heat pump. That makes a mini split a complete comfort solution for a space rather than a cooling-only or heating-only fix.
Installation involves mounting the indoor unit or units, placing the outdoor compressor, running refrigerant lines and electrical through a small wall penetration, and commissioning the system to confirm proper charge and operation. Multi-zone systems require sizing each indoor unit to its specific room rather than dividing total capacity evenly.
Mini splits can develop the same categories of issues as any heat pump system — refrigerant leaks, electrical component failures, control faults — plus filter and coil maintenance specific to the indoor unit design. Routine cleaning of the indoor unit's filter matters more with mini splits than central systems, since a clogged filter is more immediately noticeable in a single-zone space.
Extending existing ductwork to reach a new or underserved space is sometimes possible, but it depends on whether the existing system has the capacity to serve additional square footage and whether a duct run is even physically practical for the space. A mini split sidesteps both issues by adding independent capacity exactly where it is needed, which is usually the more cost-effective and less invasive option for additions, garages and problem rooms.
